GATE

Gifted and Talented Enrichment

Gifted and Talented Enrichment

What is PGUSD GATE?
PGUSD Gifted and Talented Enrichment is a grant-funded branch of the PGUSD Curriculum Department. Each year, we use grant awards to support our classroom teachers and all PGUSD sites in providing enrichment both during and outside of the regular school day.

Where does GATE funding come from?
PGUSD enrichment activities are funded primarily via the incredible generosity of The Monterey Peninsula Foundation and The William McCaskey Chapman & Adaline Dinsmore Chapman Foundation. For more information about these two philanthropic organizations, please visit their websites:
Other grant agencies we have worked with include PGPride, The Pebble Beach Foundation, The Lyceum, KION News, CHOMP, MCOE, Scholastic, Crayola, Donors Choose, and Go Fund Me.

Does my student have to officially qualify as “gifted” in order to participate?
No. There are no formal qualification criteria for our PGUSD enrichment programs. So long as there is still room in the class or program, all interested students are welcome to participate. Please contact your specific school site for more information.

How can students participate in enrichment programs?
Our classroom teachers do their best to provide advanced curricula for all students who show interest in going beyond the grade-level standards. We strive to provide differentiated and accelerated instruction whenever possible, and as part of the regular classroom experience. PGUSD supports our teachers by providing additional funds that can be used toward classroom enrichment materials, supplies, and activities.

Additionally, we offer a wide variety of After-School Enrichment programs (ASE) that students may opt to enroll in each semester. These ASE programs and clubs are available at every PGUSD site and are typically scheduled during lunch or after school.

For more information on ASE programs at the elementary level, specifically, click HERE. Please note that in order to staff these elementary after-school programs, we must charge a small fee.

In addition to a wide variety of student clubs, our secondary sites also offer Career and Technical Education pathways, Honors classes, and AP courses. We can also support your family in concurrently enrolling at MPC. For more information about the ASE programs at both the middle and high school levels, please contact your school’s site counselors.

What kinds of enrichment clubs and activities can my student look forward to?
Our enrichment classes and clubs vary from year to year and reflect the interests and passions of our PGUSD students and teachers. Although some programs are recurring, others are unique. Some of the enrichment we have supported in the past includes:

  • Computer programming
  • Leadership
  • Chess
  • Art (2D and 3D)
  • Journalism
  • Music
  • Model United Nations
  • Robotics

Are there other enrichment opportunities available on the Monterey Peninsula?
